Best time to visit

With views to die for, Leh is a visual delight – another piece of heaven in Kashmir. It looks different during all the seasons but extremely scenic throughout the year. Most people prefer to visit Leh when the temperature is not too cold and the roads are clear with almost no probability of rainfall or snowfall, that is during May, June, July, and August. Then, the months of September and October bring along clear skies and chilly airs of the approaching winter, making it not so ideal time to visit Leh. After that, the winter season sets in, rendering the region isolated from the other parts of the country.

So, if you are planning a comfortable trip from Delhi to Leh, summers, and autumns are the best seasons. You can consider the months of May, June, July, and September for the trip. The winter months in Ladakh starting from November to March bring extremely low temperatures and frequent snowfalls along.

Food

Try to stick to bottled/filtered water while you are in India. drink water and carry dry snacks including dried fruits, nuts, and cookies before the road trip. However there is no need to go overboard as hot food is plentiful, cheap, and easily available in India.

There are hundreds of dhabas along the way, most of which is well to vegetarian and vegan travellers. Expect to find paranthas (stuffed flatbreads) and sandwiches. As you begin to inch closer to Leh, you will start noticing a smattering of mok mok/momos (steamed dumplings), chowmein (an Indian take on traditional stir-fried noodles), and Maggi (Instant noodles) on menus. A meal at a roadside shack will rarely set you back by more than £5 (INR 500). There are also loads of mid-range and some truly big restaurants in the bigger cities you’ll hit during this road trip.

Expenses

The cumulative expenses depend on the kinds of hotels and restaurants you choose to stay and dine. As with every other country we visit, we chose quaint lil B&Bs for the days when we had to be on the road all day and just needed a place to crash at night and luxury hotels for languorous days that had to be spent in the same city. Besides accommodation and food, expect to spend approximately £120 (INR 12000) on fuel and £40 (INR 4000) on tolls and road taxes if you’re driving a rental car. This sum is a bit lower if you’re driving your own car.
